Regular Season Schedule; "X" games
Posted: 10/9/15

The regular season schedule is "in progress." The games for week 12 shoud be published this weekend. The first step in creating the schedule is to lay out the remote teams' schedules, Lake Tahoe and Fresno. The Lake Tahoe schedule, after many iterations, was completed yesterday (10/8), so Fresno is next.

It will likely be sometime around Wednesday 10/14 when the schedule goes out to the clubs for review, and the review will last into the weekend. So if there are no big issues, the whole schedule can be expected to be released by 10/18 or so.

One thing that always causes confusion are the early-season "X" games. We've been doing these games since about 1995, when the web site first came online, but they still mystify people. (Prior to the web site, no one ever knew standings so teams just sort of waited around at the end of the season for the league to tell them if they qualified. Seriously.)

The NORCAL schedule is balanced. That means within a division, each team must play the other teams in their division an equal number of games. Home/road against a particular team is not necessarily balanced, but home/road over the regular season will be. The NORCAL schedule includes 16 games for each team during the regular season. If a particular division has 9 teams, a team will play the other opponents twice for a total of 8 x 2 = 16 games. A 5-team division, like 18A, will play 4 opponents 4 times each.

But all other division sizes do not come out evenly. If a division has 6 teams (10A, 10BB, 16A), they will play each of 5 opponents 3 times, for a total of 15 games that count for standings. So in those divisions, the schedule includes one additional game that does not count for standings.

In an 8-team division (12A), a team plays 2 x 7 = 14 games for standings, and then 2 non-standings games.

And then there are bantams. We love bantams. Both 14A and 14B have 7 teams each, plus a girls' team. The girls' teams are not competing toward the NORCAL championship, but each team will play them twice. So bantams play 2 rounds against 6 opponents for standings. They play 2 rounds against the girls for non-standings. That accounts for 14 games. So they also will play the other teams in their division twice more for non-standings.

The general rule is that the non-standings (other than bantams vs. girls) games should be played as early in the season as possible. Hence, there are a lot of week 11 "X" games as part of the schedule.

USA Hockey Referee Seminars
Posted: 6/9/15

The local officiating association, IHONC, has asked us to post the schedule of the USA Hockey referee seminars scheduled to take place in the Bay Area.

Please visit: Referees page

The outlying areas always need more officials. The need is especially acute in South Lake Tahoe, Fresno, Stockton, Vacaville, San Francisco, Oakland and Santa Rosa.
